Modern is contemporary style, clean lines, simple patterns, metallic finishes

adding pops of color with a rug, wall art and accent pillows.

Leaning a large floor mirror will brighten the room and make it appear larger.

If you cannot remove the wood panels then you could paint over them. If this is not possible then you can face off the panels with plaster boards, skim the boards with new plaster and then treat as an ordinary wall and paint. If you must retain the wood panels then get some lighting to brighten the room. A few mirrors also help as this will reflect light.

option one: buy some sheeting fabric in a colour you want and using another person at the other end, stretch is and STAPLE on the the wall. If you're careful, you will only need staples at each end and they won't leave damage to the walls when you go.

option two: Buy some very large canvas art panels and either copy on to them something you like or have an arty friend do it.

Chocolate is a modern colour at the moment. Keep the room simple and sleek, and use a bold red in furnishings or rug. Your choice of colour in furnishings will bring the room up to date, so consider buying some new cushion covers and/or sofa covers.

You're pretty limited when you're renting.

I'm assuming if you can't paint you also can't stain the wood either.

honestly, if you can't paint it I would just roll with it. get a really chunky shag carpet in a fun color, and paint a chandelier to match.

to make that more modern, use a color you wouldnt expect. like a really bright green or purple.

stick a modern couch or other furniture in there too. nuetral colors, just not black since the room is dark enough already.

Get a nice light colored area rug to help break up all the dark coloring. Also maybe get some art to hang on the walls that has bright, fresh, colors.
