If you like a country style try going for "french" country instead. Use some ideas that are from http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/dc_styles_french/article/0,1793,HGTV_3517_1385122,00.html

To create a French Country kitchen in your own home:

Use rustic, earthy materials that will offer age-old elegance and practicality. Rough-hewn beams set in plaster ceilings provide a contrast to a clean, white backdrop. Brick or tile flooring offers texture and durability. Tile is also used to line walls and countertops to complete the look.

Incorporate plenty of generous storage. Richly carved cupboards and dressers conceal kitchen contents. Cover built-in shelving with decorative doors to create an armoire-type appearance. Pots, pans and spices are usually kept within easy reach for the cook.

For seating, unadorned farmhouse-style tables are usually surrounded by rush-bottomed ladderback chairs, often in an assortment of styles. This will add to the comfortable style of the kitchen.

Chickens in kitchens are also fun and will have the country theme you are looking for. Don't go overboard, but have a couple things with chickens and pull colors from them to paint your walls and also for your curtains.

The hardscape of your kitchen should be neutral. Yellow is a very traditional kitchen color. Any color is fine but stay away from wallpaper (expensive and quickly out of style) and any color that is 'out there'. A wallpaper border would be okay. Look in the discontinued bins.

I adore Charity Shops (Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc.) You can find a lot of kitchen decor items at a small price.

Most important, what do you like? What do you consider country?

My first step would be a trip to the library to look at kitchen decorating magazines and books. You can also find those at the Charity Shops for a few cents. Make a notebook of ideas. Plan your budget. Save most of your money on items to make a big impact.

You can display your dishes on an open shelf. You could make a country look by taking plain paper and edging the shelves with it. Use a double stick tape to attach it.

I have used contact paper in apartments to decorate inexpensively. You can even cover your switch plates with it.

Oh so many ideas . . . what fun to give the kitchen a new look. Most of all . . . have fun!

I would skip a "theme" as in everything roosters, cows, etc. and go with a "homespun" look. Neutral walls, gingham or plaid curtains (that you could easily make yourself which would be both low cost and personalized to your taste. Most of the homespun material is $2/yard at Walmart) You could cover your light switch panels to match the curtains. Display old tins or old cookware/untensils on top of your cupboards. Mason jars filled with rag balls or potpouri and tied with a twine bow or raffia could be some decorations. As far as salt/pepper shakers, spoon rest, paper towel holders, etc. I would just go with something neutral like glass, copper, silver.

Use a fish internet with some colourful address surprising from it and a tumbler fish cellular (or make your very own from greater address) for a window dressing. beautify the table with a gold fish bowl with a real gold fish. dangle an previous fishing oar above the cabinets or a fishing pole--perhaps bamboo. An previous fisherman's basket surprising on the wall could be sturdy for a mail catchall or placed flowers in it. shop spices in a steel address field close to the range.

i like more contemporary looks, the bad thing about going with a theme is after you have spent all that money, you are stuck with it for a long time to come. because buying theme accents for the kitchen are very pricey.

If you pick one of the themes from a few years back, it should be easy to come across inexpensively (clearance, yard sales, thrift stores, etc). Not too long ago, some popular themes were Cows, Sunflowers, Doughboy, Apples, and a blue country flowers pattern.
