I have one wardrobe that takes up one whole wall. I never wanted it my Mum and grandma only put it their wasting space in my already too small room (trust me it's tiny) to store their own junk they don't truly need (they especially my grandma tend to be hoarders).

I also have a large window taking up almost an entire wall. The house was built in the late 60's and to be honest I don't think it was designed with mind to the future. What are some other tips to make my room appear bigger and more spacious?

The most important thing is to add is as many reflective surfaces as you possibly can. Mirrors, shiny chrome, mirrors on vases, sequined or lamee pillows. Speak to your mom and grand mom about removing or taking over the wardrobe. If you get the cleaned out wardrobe lose your dresser or visa versa. Put you bed lengthwise on the window wall. Add pillows against that wall on the bed.

Color is really not your answer here.. Getting the light to bounce around the room will be key. Any high gloss color will reflect ..even black. http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2009/01/21/article-1125742-0321520D000005DC-333_634x670.jpg

One way to make a room appear more roomy/larger is to have the walls, flooring and most of the furnishings be in the same color family.

Lets say the wardrobe is a light color wood or paint...painting the walls the same or very similar color will make the wardrobe blend and the room appear larger.

Now if the flooring is also a light tan/beige for instance, the whole room will appear even more roomy.

If the flooring is dark and the walls and wardrobe is light then get a large area rug in a light color or pattern to continue the light color theme.

You can then use light color bedding and curtains. They do not have to be tan/beige but can be a light color that you like.

Limiting the clutter will also help to make the room appear and feel larger.

Now, if the wardrobe happens to be a dark wood or paint, find a similar paint color for the walls only a couple of shades lighter. Same for the floor/area rug.

The bedding and curtains could then be a shade or two lighter than the walls, you could even use prints, basically using the same color family throughout the room in different shades and textures.

If you cannot paint the walls, then maybe paint the wardrobe to blend with the walls.

Better lighting also helps.

I would take all the junk and box it neatly and find another place for it. It is amazing how much stuff you can fit under the sofa in your living area if you bag it. Then you can either remove the wardrobe or you can use it yourself. I would either put glass on the doors (peel and stick tiles are great, or get the inexpensive 4' mirrors from zellers or walmart) or take off the doors entirely and paint it one light color, have your clothes neatly piled on the shelfs. If it has drawers you can actually remove the drawer and install a little shelf ( you can get pre-cut wood at your local lumber/hardware store, it might cost a bit to have it cut). Paint the back of the open wardrobe a deeper color to highlight your display. You can even install glass shelves and add a light!

The window can be partially bocked with a heavy drape, or a screen (I made one myself with some discarded folding closet doors with a coat of paint) and you can just put a table in front of the drape,..it looks quite elegant.

Lighting plays an important role in creating a spacious feeling. You can get a few desk lights with the adjustable necks from a thrift store and place one behind a plant aimed at the ceiling then another in the wardrobe aimed at the back of your unit (assuming you have shelves).

Mirrors can be placed around the room to allowing light and reflections to work their magic, and use what you like to create reflective surfaces (like crystals and babbles),, For fabric selct low textures and strategically add some faux fur against satins and glitter.

Paint the walls a color you personally look good in. The rule of thumb is that light colors make the walls receed and dark bring them closer. The same is true of warm colors being closer and cooler colors being further away. However, with lighting and some relfection, you can use dark color in punches, or just say to heck with it and paint the walls a deep rich color that you adore.

Time to claim your space...you go girl!!!!

You can use the wall space stack or hang things make shelf's or use mesh nets to toss cushions and stuff animals in ...if you have a closet try the same thing stack neatly or get an organizers maybe to racks ...this will clear up the room some you can also place things under the bed to save space and if you do paint i make sure it is a pale color use a small solid color border like it is a picture frame - window type look it make is look larger also because it is like looking into a picture or out a window.

After having a large bedroom, I had to get use to a small cramped one -it was quaint- but I had a lot of stuff and although I got rid of bulk items, I still had to make it work. ( I now have moved again though into a larger room :) ) Anyway, me and other family members solves the small room issue by leaving the room white or off white, and we bought narrow bookcases that stand against the wall, each had five shelves, In stead of spreading my sentimental decors here and there in the room, I put them on the shelves along with some books and stationary on others, the other shelves I put my library of books. I made loads of space.

One family member, put his vests, t-shirts and towels in them-- looks great! Another put her narrow Ikea computer table between two of the narrows book cases and made one side of the wall one whole work space area. The bookcases were oak so this made the room ever spacier.

Ikea has many narrows pieces of furniture that work wonders.

Light colors, especially white, will make a room seem larger due to the increased amount of light reflected off the walls. Also, hang shelves for storage and get things off the floor. The more floor space you can open up will make it seem bigger as well.

Well Sweetie I hate to tell you that it's not as much as the painting that will make a room feel bigger It's how you place your stuff you have a small room think about going up and having a large bed in your room when all you need is a twin will help and getting more organized. Try relocating that closet if it is possible and pleading your case of having more room to them. Never know it might make them take it out. I said might my dear . Then painting your room will be to your liking.

Agree with TC and Kendra: brighter colors really seem to make the room appear bigger and open.

Another thing that I tried was to make a subtle accent mark or border that complements the 'base' paint color. While putting in an accent stripe appears to be a royal pain, I used a tool called the U-Stripe It & Design (http://www.ustripeit.com) tool to do it. Really sped up the process and made it a one-person job.

Best of luck!

bright or light colors make rooms appear bigger than they r. try painting one wall a different tone or color for a dramatic look. i dont sugest using textures or layering paint for design, i think it makes rooms look smaller. light shear curtains instead of drapes can also make it seem bigger. try hangin a full length mirror on the back side of ur bedroom door n maybe one on the wall, this can also give the appearance of more space than there is.

Try to put somewhat large mirror/s to the wall opposite the window, they definately make it looks bigger.

I have found that buttery yellows, light blues, or light greens work well (pastels, cool colors). Ultimately though, white makes the room look the biggest, most open.
