Question:
Help with color scheme for living room/dining room combo room?
2007-06-23 06:48:28 UTC
I need help with picking the colors for the rugs, curtians, pictures and pillows.....Sadly the walls must stay white, but I have white leather furniture, a mahogony wood with a cherry colored stain shrunk. In the 2 curio cabinets in the shrunk I have crystal and Lladro porcelian figurines. My dining room furniture consists of a china cabinet and hutch and a dining table that seats 6 the wood is mahogony with a cherry stain. In my china cabinet I have diffrent sets of crystal glasses along with china. The pattern on the china is pink and red roses set on what looks like an opal color the way an opal kinda shines and has that translucent effect. However, I do not want to decorate in pink and red, the roses do not stand out enough to have to pick these colors.
The style of the wood pieces can best be described as british coloniel with a slightly updated touch to it. I hope that makes scence. Thanks for your help.

How about adding curtains/ area rugs in a golden wheat tone, the white of the furniture will play nicely off it, and you could add a few inexpensive accessories with your china to tie it all together. Amber hue'd wine glasses, sixties art glass in a golden tone. Fresh white or stargazer lilies in a vase will immediately make the rooms feel more modern, elegant & pulled together. Mixing less formal stoneware with your china, will help to make the china pattern a lovely accent. Also painting a large inexpensive canvas with an accent color is a great solution for adding color without painting a wall.

If your walls must stay white then you will have to bring color into focus by either using the colors from your carpet or a large Indian throw rug that lays either on the floor or hangs as a vocal point on a wall as you enter the room. You may use colors from a large picture as well. Either way you need a nice piece that adds interest as a vocal point or theme to your design.

Pick out two to three colors from that piece, that goes well together. Find throw pillows with that color choice and add them to your sofa. Add a throw blanket to the sofa.

It sounds kind of like you may have already with the cherry wood, crytsal, red roses and white leather sofa have established a formal look by this discription.

I don't know if your wanting it to be formal or a relaxting inviting room for you and your guest. Either way be creative.

By adding some lighting to set the moods by night and texture by adding feathers, sticks, fabrics that holds those colors you like but in different sizes, shapes and texture.

All that being said and you still don't know what colors to use to create a fantastic room, let just go with traditional greens, like "foam sea greens and light blues and browns. "

First off, I love Lladro. hehe

I think a tan colored rug will go with the white furniture, a little boring but it fits. Then to kick it up a notch, pick a dark red curtain and dark red and tan throw pillows for the couches.. That will tie everything together. To further the idea, decorate with dark red and tan frames (black and white photos will probably work best) on the walls, and dark red and tan candles on the table.

Simple, yet just enough to bring out the china.

Of course, when I say dark red, I don't mean dark dark, just not your typical red, that would be too bright. A few shades darker would probably do the trick.

Well, it all looks good in my head anyway, but then- maybe it won't in your place.

Good luck!

anything goes with white really but you sound according to you china pattern a bit traditional so you probably want a neutral theme for both living room and dining room.. beiges, sand tones and ivory tones but you can add splashes of colours for the sofa and to stay safe in your traditional theme you could use some pillows that were in muted blues or greens with a bit of white as well as the curtains. Rugs could be muted blues and whites and the accessories in the dining rom could be in a muted green( bringing out the stem in roses or leaves beacuse you do not want to use rose pink or red ) although some nice cranberry tones likes candles and painting on wall with that colour might look pretty.

Yikes! There's a lot going on here. White leather, roses on your china, curio, and crystal? It sounds like you are stuck a little bit in the 1980's. Perhaps you should consider an update in your furniture, or get some curtains to match the "vintage" look, along with some 1980's artwork. Look at the bhg.com and hgtv.com websites for some decorating ideas - I think you might need professional help!

Good luck!

well the walls have to stay white, so best to match the colors you have or you will need to buy more/ replace when things dont go. chocolate/creams are realy in and will compliment the white, some tasteful pictures might help the plain walls too.
