What brand of paint is good but inexpensive? I am painting my kitchen red and have heard that it is important to not get "cheap" paint because i will have to use many coats. The color I like is Ralph Lauren brand but then someone told me it is not good quality.

My husband is an interior, exterior painter by profession. He will not guarantee anything except Mautz or Sherwin Williams paints. However they are not cheap.

There are many brands of paint out there. Buy a good paint at a reputable store. You have heard right, cheap paint requires more coats, you end up spending more time and not saving any money. I buy Kelley Moore and Dutch Boy, I have also used Sears's best paint. I can't remember what they call it though. All have worked very well for me. Good luck!!!

Ralph lauren is sucky paint...Benjamin moore is fortified..they put a touch of oil based in thier latex paint, so it takes longer to dry..especially red..for the pigments are very hard..and it streakks alot..Sherwin Willimas is greta, but isn't cheap..the good labels..now here is something alot don't know... Sherwin willimas makes a label for wal mart called "color Place'..it covers good is tough and is the same as what Sherwin Willimas sell under the pro mar 400 label..a mid grade contractors paint..You need A paint with a sheen in the kitchen to be scrubbable...so get at least a satin finish..it works well, is scrubbable and about 13.00 A gallon...Dutch boy is also made by sherwin willimas..I have used alot of this "color place" label at wal Mart..and it is made by sherwin willimas..but sold by bulk to walmart with thier label and makes it affordable.. i prefer using top labels of paint, but when people are on a budget..I recomend this..

using red? this is the most important part: prime the walls first with a TINTED PRIMER. buy a gallon of primer at home depot, and have them drop a couple drops of black in it. this should eliminate a couple of coats of red. there's a reason car primer is gray, it hides the shadows that usually are visible through the topcoat. i've actually painted a red accent wall once, and it took 5 coats to satisfy me. using the same color once again, it took 1 tinted primer coat, and 2 top coats to get the same coverage. as far as the quality of paint goes, anything but glidden has worked for me. dunn edwards has been THE best for me, and the most expensive. you'll be fine with behr semi-gloss from home depot. just remember the tinted primer coat.

having worked as a painter and been in the construction industry all my life and following in my dad footsteps, my experience has been that paint coverage has more to do with painting technique than the quality of paint , however a good quality paint is going to hold up to wear and tear better. in a kitchen its pretty important to use a semi-gloss ,versus a flat. you want to be able to wipe the walls down, the paints from your home improvement centers, such as lowes and home depot are just fine.

I personally like Valspar paint. It's good quality paint and covers well. you may need to do several coats depending on the color you have chosen. I used a dark green in my living room and only had to do two coats.
