I had new carpet installed today and now my doors are 1/2" too big. Where can I go to have my doors shortened?

Some doors are fine but four of them are now too big. The guy who installed the carpet wanted me to pay $25 per door to cut them but I thought $100 was a little pricey to cut half an inch from the bottom of four doors…But now I’m stuck with stuck doors!
Thanks in advance to anybody answering this.

If I lived in your neighbourhood, I'd be charging you $15/ hr. I'm in a rural area where prices are cheap, I do handyman stuff, and I'm cheap since I'm just starting. My prices are going up soon. Figure that the doors have to come off, which can take some time if they have been there a while, they have to be set up on sawhorses or something, they have to be measured and cut, maybe the edges smoothed off, and then re-hung. If they're hollow doors, they might have to to be fiddled with if something is cut off, if they're solid old doors, they can be tough and slow to cut. It would take a couple of hours minimum, I'd guess, plus maybe some travel time. And now you're going to have to be at home again for a second tradesman to come by. I'd have paid the $100, which is probably a small fraction of what you paid for carpet and installation.

This is a common issue, I am sorry that your flooring dealer was not thorough with you. The $25 per door is actually quite cheap! I wont say you can't find a handyman who will do it for the same or cheaper, but depending on the type of door (hollow core, solid, etc..) and the hinges it could easily cost $75-$100 per door for a "special trip" The flooring installer was already there and offered you a more than fair deal..you may try to call the dealer and ask if they will still send the installer back at the same price and just have them do it. Many flooring dealers will not even cut doors. But use that their staff did not inform you well as your leverage and just have them do it.
Hope this helps!

well $25 isnt too far off since they have to take the door off the hinges but you might try calling a local handyman service and see what they would charge you. also might asking if any of your neighbors know how to do it

$25.00 per door is more than fair.
Call a carpenter.
