Question:
Are futons good to sleep on?
?
2009-06-13 16:31:20 UTC
I hear all sorts of crazy comments about futons and how uncomfortable they can be. They are very fashion forward (some anyway!), but are they comfortable to actually sleep on??? I tried sleeping on one in my parents' beach house and it wasn't very comfortable, and the mattress material was scratchy and uninviting!

So...if I find a nice futon for a nice bargain and it's comfortable...should I risk buying it and dropping my full size bed??

Thank you in advance!

for me it's pretty comfortable to sleep in. i guess those who find it uncomfortable are those who aren't used to sleeping on them.

i can even sleep comfortably on a 'banig' (handwoven mat, made out of leaves, it's not even a mattress but since i'm used to sleeping on it)..

if you find a comfortable futon though, and you think you can live with it (and not miss your full size bed) then buy it..

Sleeping On A Futon

A futon is only as good as the money you are willing to pay for it. The cheap ones are available everywhere and they are not comfortable. If you choose from the higher end you will find them very comfortable. But you will have to search in your area for stores that sell higher end futons. And no one sleeps on the actual futon material no matter how much you pay. They still require sheets. So if you want one, be prepared to pay for it and do your homework to find the higher end. I used to work in a high end contemporary furniture store where we sold expensive futons. They were fabulous. We also offered the lower end. I wouldn't even sit on one of those let alone sleep on them. Futons are no different than any other mattress option. You get what you pay for.

It's a cheap option but not always a comfortable one...but everyone is different... In general I've found the cheap $150 things from big retailers to be the worst. The mattress is thin, you feel the springs underneath, they're noisy as hell and their overall construction is so cheap it wouldn't take much to break the whole thing rendering it useless. If you're hell bent on having a futon, go all out and get a quality one from a real futon store. Be prepared to spend something in the range of $1000-and prices vary like crazy, but you get the idea (run from the stuff that's $100-200). Most of the cost is in the frame itself but you'll need a good thick mattress too.

Well.. I think it really depends on the person and the type of futon. I used to have two futons but one was very comfortable and one wasn't. So I think you should really see what kind of mattress thing it has before buying it. You wouldn't want to sleep on anything lumpy (:

Hope this helps. (:

It takes practice. If there is a comforter on the bed, fold it double and sleep on it for extra cushioning, and as a thank you gift, I suggest you buy her a bed topper she can roll up behind the futon when its not in use. Simply tell her you are more used to a softer bed, and that other people may be as well. I'm sure she will understand.

I sleep on a futon mattress on the floor. It is very comfortable for me. It might be the futon frame if so just take off the matteress, it is light enough, and just sleep on the floor on it. The frame is just for show anyway, it's for "couch" to conserve space, and to be thrifty.

I sleep on a futon...

I find it pretty comfortable.

It saves space in my room.

All I do is put a sheet on top of the "mattress" and lay on top of the sheet.

I have one of those modern ones and I like it!

I was having alot of anxiety before sleeping and could not fall asleep. Had many many sleepless nights.

I was just playing with the program one afternoon and wanted to listen to the Power Nap track. Next thing I knew I was waking up! Fell right asleep without trying. After using the Fall Asleep track, I could fall asleep right away. But I didn't realize that I shouldn't be using that one all night. Switched to Whole Night and have been using it ever since.

I can go to sleep with ease now. I just lay and listen to the sounds and next thing I know I am waking up from a nice sleep. I don't suffer from lack of sleep anymore. I keep an IPod with earbuds next to my bed and take it ALWAYS when traveling. The earbuds help block out ambient noise and the sleep tracks keep me sleeping sound :)

Reboot your brain & sleep soundly again?
