If you are going to replace a tile countertop with granite, what needs to be removed in addition to the tile? I noticed that our tile (which i assume is standard) hangs down about 2-3 inches on the edges. How do you remove the tile and have it not show once the granite is in place? Is there a sheet of board underneat the tile that you have to remove as well?

Granite countertops are the whole countertop so you would completely remove the counter surface to be replaced by professionals. I am guessing you are talking about solid granite counters. You need to talk to your installer as they might remove the old counters for nothing or small fee, which is well worth it saving you work and bother.

Replacing a countertop with granite is not something one should take on as a DIY project unless you have experience. The existing countertop tiles are likely laid in with mortar or similar adhesive on top of a rigid surface (waferboard, plywood, etc.) . The whole thing would be removed in one unit or cut up in manageable pieces, then the properly measured granite top would be installed and attached to the cabinets/frame. Definitely requires someone with the knowledge and experience for installation. The only thing I personally would do is to remove the old tops when the contractor is coming to install the new top.

relying on the place you're located and the orientation of your counters, inventory granite or sturdy-floor tops might no longer be plenty greater high priced than custom-fabricated laminate tops. I pretty propose calling a countertop contractor and getting estimates. i these days replaced my 6x6 1980's countertop and backsplash with 12x12 granite tile. low-fee than granite slab, and the grout joints are a million/8" and not even sizeable from outdoors 12" away. The tile fabric grew to become into some remnant from the tile adult adult males previous pastime, so I have been given hte fabric for a great cost. might desire to call around domestically to work out what human beings have as remnants. stable luck!

The entire counter should be removed, meaning you should be able to see into the cabinets from the top when it's removed. So you don't have to chip the tile up, you should be able to remove whatever the tile is affixed to as well.
