Would it be physically possible to build a full house size Smial (Hobbit Hole) as described by J. R. R. Tolkein in "The Hobbit" and the "Lord of the Rings" series, as in a fully wooden structure (minus fasteners) as would be expected from buildings in the fictitious Shire.

I don't see it being impossible, as we sell Hobbit Hole Playhouses: http://www.hayneedle.com/baby-and-kids/outdoor-playhouses_wooden-wonders_list_170569_4295161071

Good luck,

I have also seen several working Hobbit Holes. In some cases, they were build back into hillsides. In others, the earth was moved up around the dwelling for that effect. I can't say how much it would cost, but it can be done.

I have actually seen a home built as a "Hobbit Hole". Amazingly wonderful. The home owner is a friend. In order to create a Hobbit Hole he had to hire architects, engineers, interior designers, landscape contractors and many other specialist. They had to have soil quality test and soil peculation test done before they even considered pursuing their dream home. Since a large portion of the home is below ground soil quality is a big issue. That must be evaluated. Shifting/ unstable soil does not lend itself to below grade construction. Soil condition will dictate the amount of re-enforcement needed which will impact the cost of construction. You WILL pay more $$$ per square foot for below grade construction.

Good luck

They build Hobbit Hole homes, plus custom design larger shapes. Also a link containing images for placing these small dwellings.
