Here's my informed opinion. I do design work in a renovation company - one of the things we do is kitchens - and many different types of countertops.

I like quartz better than I like granite - in fact I will be getting it for my own home.

Quartz can look like granite, however it is far more uniform so that seams and the like are less visible.

It has no fissures or pores - it's actually certified by the National Sanitation Foundation for food areas. Granite is not. (Silestone in particular has MicroBan in it's mix - so it is even more resistant to bacteria)

It never needs to be sealed - granite does.

It is as scratch resistant, or even more so, than granite.

Quartz has a warranty when installed by a certified installer; granite does not have a warranty.

There are many advantages of quartz over granite. That's why we are doing SO much of it lately - along with Corian (and the like).

Hope this helps!

I prefer quartz to granite tops and here is why. Quartz tops are less expensive but give the same overall look. You can get them in slabs just like granite. You cand get the ame edge treatments such as an ogee or bullnose. They are harder and don't leave water rings of acid stains like the more porus granite counters. Color consistancy remains the same even if you have to add them in phases... So dye lots are easier to match if you decide to add more at a later. Installers prefer quartz because the breakage is alot less because of the lack of weak veined areas in granite. All in all the industry recognizes quartz counters as a natural surface because they are made up of over 93% natural product (quartz). Check out www.caesarstone.com

they have awesome colors and offer 10 or 15 year warranty.

Quartz is slightly higher... I think that Granite looks better. No quality difference.

We built our home a year ago. It was such a headach figuring out what counter top material. We narrowed it down to granite... Uba Tuba. It was beautiful. Holds up superb, but don't cut on it... it'd dull your knives. Neadless to say we ended up w/ a custom made material. The Uba Tuba was too busy w/ all the hickory & pine in our house. The material is like a quartz but was custom made in two pieces to fit my kitchen layout & color to match my walls. Make sure you ask about stains & chipping when looking at counter materials. I suggest going to a specialty store. Good luck.

quartz has many more fissures (very fine cracks) in it and can crack when pounding a steak or whatever. Granite is more solid and will last forever with no maintenance but cleaning. Buy the granite.

Granite is the best and virtually indestructable, given normal use...
